A Popular Photo
This photo has been the most popular on my Facebook page, easily eclipsing my other photos in number of page views, times it has been shared, number of Likes for the photo and it has also brought an increase in Likes for my page. I’m not sure what it is that has captured people’s interest. Maybe it is just something different to the usual landscapes of the West Coast. The photo was taken from an old gun emplacement on the hill overlooking Cobden. The view is looking south and features Grey Hospital on the left, a helicopter hangar in the middle and the end of the airport runway on the right. Behind that is the Tasman Sea, and in the background can be seen Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. The photo was taken on my Olympus E-5 camera fitted with an Olympus OM system 350 mm lens. Fitted to my 4/3 system E-5 with an adapter it becomes a 700 mm SLR equivalent. This super telephoto effect has compressed the view, making things appear closer to each other than they really are. The hospital is a considerable distance away from where I took the photo – maybe a mile- and the mountain looks much closer than it really is. The effect makes for an interesting image that makes the scene appear larger than life. Perhaps that is its appeal.
