Boats of Greymouth

Search by the main part of a name. Don’t use words or numerals under 3 characters long, e.g. Sea Emerald is fine, Te Aroha is not but a search for just Aroha will find it. Galatea II won’t work but just Galatea will find it.

THE PORT OF GREYMOUTH

Greymouth has had a port since the gold rushes of the 1860s but major port development did not happen until the 1880s when it became busy with the export of timber and coal which later declined. Today much of the old port has fallen into disrepair. Fishing has become a major contributor to the local economy. According to the Grey District Council “The fishing industry developed in the 1970’s and Greymouth is home to 35 local vessels, up to 60 visiting vessels in the tuna season (January–April) and significant landings of hoki by 20 to 40 metre length vessels in the July-September season.”

THE ALBUM

Over several years I’ve photographed fishing vessels coming in and out of the port and I have created this album to show that collection. I can’t claim that all will be photographic masterpieces as the aim  was to create a photographic record rather than to showcase any photographic skill. At the same time I hope that some will be of sufficient interest so that I can sell some prints. While most photos are of fishing boats some other boating and port-related subjects may also be included. The boats include those that are locally-based as well as those that visit from other places, especially in the tuna and hoki seasons at which times the port can be quite busy.

Currently the galleries only go back as far as 2019.  I’m reorganising the site and there is still work to be done on the earlier galleries. I’ll get them up as soon as I can. In the meantime if you have an enquiry about a boat earlier than the current galleries please ask (see contact page). I have very few earlier than 2010 but an increasing number after that.
