Birds

There are many species of birds to be found on the West Coast. Given its long coastline it is not surprising that a good number are sea birds or wading birds that frequent the estuaries and lagoons. The forests and mountains are also home to many species – a few are endemic to the West Coast (western side of the South Island) while some others are found in other parts of New Zealand, Australasia, the Pacific or other parts of the world.

Some species make their home on the West Coast for part of the year but migrate to other parts, mostly Asia. New Zealand, including the West Coast, is also home to some birds that have been introduced here from other places. My focus in this gallery is the birds that are native to these parts but I may sometimes include photos of non-native species if I think they are of particular interest.

Search by the main part of a name. Don’t use words or numerals under 3 characters long, e.g. Sea Emerald is fine, Te Aroha is not but a search for just Aroha will find it. Galatea II won’t work but just Galatea will find it.
