Insects & Invertebrates

New Zealand has many interesting insects and the majority are only found only in this country. Insects are very important as they provide food for other creatures including lizards, fish, bats, birds, and other insects. Insects pollinate plants; quite a number of plants are pollinated by night-flying insects which is why New Zealand has a large number of white-flowered plants – they are more easily found in the dark. Insects also help break down organic material into compounds that feed plants. I have only a handful of photos in this section at present but I plan to make up that deficiency in the near future.

The gallery may include some species that are classed as invertebrates rather than insects, such as the Weta which is more closely related to the larger invertebrates such as crayfish rather than to common insects like bush bugs.

Search by the main part of a name. Don’t use words or numerals under 3 characters long, e.g. Sea Emerald is fine, Te Aroha is not but a search for just Aroha will find it. Galatea II won’t work but just Galatea will find it.
