Slate Creek Waterfall

Reaching a Landmark

A Thank You to my followers… It was creeping up for a while and suddenly it was here – the figure of 12000 for my list of followers on Facebook. Having that many people watching my photography seems a bit surreal now. I can still remember when I was excited about getting 30 Likes for a photo I put up. My followers then though were probably fewer than a hundred. Things have changed a bit it in that time, including the balance of photography subjects. I saw myself as primarily a landscape and nature photographer. I still do that but the boats coming in and out of the Grey River have taken over as my main focus. Right now I’m photographing not much else but that’s a consequence of breaking my wrist a few weeks ago. It’s only a short distance from my home to the river mouth and I can now manage the camera for photographing the boats. It’s also been a busy time with a lot of boats coming in and out for the Hoki season. That’s now coming to an end and boats that have come from other ports are now dispersing. My wrist is healing and I will soon be able to go further afield to photograph the landscapes and the nature subjects. There will still be the boats now and then though.

Anyway, I have written this to mark the occasion of my reaching 12000 followers for my Facebook Page and to thank those people for their support. I must make an effort to write more posts too.

I’ve used this waterfall photo because although it was taken a few years ago I’ve never added it to my gallery. It’s at Slate Creek on the south side of the river in the Mikonui Valley in South Westland. I had previously been unaware of its existence. I was photographing mists around a swamp area in the valley and my son Barry who was with me had been having a look around while he was waiting. He came back and said “You might want to have a look at this, Dad.” And so I saw it and then I photographed it. It’s come up now because while I’ve been partially incapacitated by my wrist injury I’ve been looking back at old photos and finding some that deserve a place in my galleries. I expect to do a bit of that over the next few weeks. And I’ve used a photo of this landmark to celebrate my other landmark, reaching 12000 followers.
